Hoekstra upset with treatment of Iraqi prisoners
By Kevin Braciszeski, Daily News Staff Writer
Excerpts:
U.S. Rep.
Pete Hoekstra: "I've been to Guantanamo and seen the treatment of our prisoners...
. We've had practice and experience in dealing with detainees and
interrogation for the past couple years. You would think they could take what's
been established, pick it up and move it to Afghanistan and Iraq. ...
"... at least for some time, this is going to be the image seen around
the world of the U.S. presence in Iraq. ... We have to fully pursue
the al legations and the consensus is to take it up the ranks. You can't have
those types of conditions going on without someone knowing. They existed over a
period of time and you've got to believe it was relatively well known."
Hoekstra suggested that anyone found guilty in connection with the abuses should face punishment "to the fullest extent of military code or U.S. law."
