This is from an interview with Pete Hoekstra in 1998 with the
Traverse City Record-Eagle:
Like many lawmakers on the campaign trail, he's also wary of the
gloomy economic picture in the Far East and much of Europe. "I think
it's a big concern," Hoekstra said. "If they bleed over into here and if
it affects us, it will affect some of the emerging areas of the economy,
rather than the more-established areas."
"But I'd be a whole lot more nervous if we were still looking at $300
billion in deficits," he continued. "We have more economic flexibility
to respond now than five years ago."
I wonder what he thinks now that we have $500 billion deficits????
